 Dear Friends:

The Empire State is privileged to be the home of a wide array of business opportunities among independent small and thriving commercial ventures, all of which contribute towards an improving economic climate, one being renewed and revitalized, by hard work, determination, and entrepreneurial spark. On this very auspicious occasion, you acknowledge and celebrate many businesses, institutions and individuals that make up the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, applauding each for significantly strengthening the economy of the great City of New-York.

We all recognize the local chambers of commerce have a valuable and viable impact upon the communities they encompass and we gratefully acknowledge the integral role that the Manhattan Chamber has in fostering economic growth throughout the Borough and beyond, as a vital resource for information and networking. Demonstrating a commitment to good government relations and a thorough understanding of the needs of the region, the Chamber has developed a strong and cooperative public/private partnership that helps to make Manhattan the wonderfully special place it is.

For the duration of this special milestone year, you pay tribute to a proud history, springing from eleven Yorkville businessmen, and you honor the voices of over 100,000 pave the way to our economic future. WHEREAS:    In 1920,money makin’ Manhattan was solidly established as a World Financial Center, but the borough’s small business community was stills searching for its collective voice. This quest ended when 11 prominent businessmen from Yorkville formed the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce as a non-partisan, non-sectarian civic and commercial organization built around a promise that “Representation of goods and services shall be truthfully made and scrupulously fulfilled.” Participating companies included barbershops, moving picture theaters, haberdashers, and 5 and 10 cent stores.

WHEREAS:    Since then, MCC has maintained its high standards while adapting to a environment. The current membership roster of 1,400 includes businesses of every variety. In 2004, the chamber was responsible for 38 economic development programs covering topics such as general business management, technology, and the development of women and minority-owned businesses. Members also benefit from access to leaders such as Bill Gates, Senator Chuck Schumer, and Lou Dobbs. However, MCC is not focused solely on the bottom line: Recently the Chamber organized the First NYC Volunteer Expo in Vanderbilt Hall; Managed the 2nd and 3rd Avenue Street Fairs, which have raised more than $2 million over the past decade for worthy non-profits; and continued its annual support of Eleanor Roosevelt High School.

WHEREAS:    Henry Ford said, “Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” Today we celebrate MCC’s beginnings and its future, both of which owe much to an unflagging dedication to hard work and cooperation. We take this opportunity to congratulate the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce on behalf of the millions of New Yorkers who have come to depend on the valuable services its members provide.

Now therefore, I, Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York, in recognition of the 85th Anniversary of this important organization, do hereby proclaim Monday, July 18, 2005 in the City of New York as
