Dear Colleague, With the recent four year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and being in the midst of this year's hurricane season, it's important to remember the role of businesses when disaster strikes. The Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC), an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, works to inform citizens of the ways businesses are helping their communities, especially in times of crises. Provided below are resources to help your organization tell this story by demonstrating the positive role that businesses play in society. Each BCLC initiative has a unique Web sticker that can placed on your Web site as a member resource. National Disaster Help Desk for Business After natural disasters, many local businesses have no idea where to turn. The Help Desk is a one-stop resource to help businesses and local chambers learn about recovery best practices, navigate federal assistance programs, and connect with national organizations that want to help. Together for Recovery The U.S. Chamber's national economic recovery campaign features more than 250 business offerings to help individuals make a mortgage payment, access health care assistance, among other resources. Siemens Sustainability Award Recognizes public-private coalitions for taking on the 21st challenge of sustainable development. A sustainable community is one that has committed to setting and achieving complementary economic, environmental, and social goals that will help build long-term competitiveness and success. Award nominations for 2010 will open October 1, 2009. Corporate Citizenship Awards Showcases businesses, trade associations, and chambers that have demonstrated ethical leadership and corporate stewardship, made a difference in their communities, and contributed to the advancement of important economic and social goals. MCC President, Nancy Ploeger, is on the board of the BCLC.
