New York City Health & Hospitals Corporation (HHC)
Intro HHC The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation was created by an Act of the New York State Legislature in 1970 to assume the functions of the Department of Hospitals. It is the largest single provider of health care in the City and one of the largest municipal health care systems in the world. Today, the Corporation plays a pivotal role in meeting the needs and demands for health care, particularly for the City’s most vulnerable residents. HHC provides medical, mental health and substance abuse services through its 11 acute care hospitals, four skilled nursing facilities, six large diagnostic and treatment centers, more than 80 community based clinics, one health maintenance organization, MetroPlus Health Plan and our HHC Home & Health Care agency. HHC’s mission: To extend equally to all New Yorkers, regardless of their ability to pay, comprehensive health services of the highest quality in an atmosphere of humane care, dignity and respect; To promote and protect, as both innovator and advocate, the health, welfare and safety of the people of New York City; To join with other health workers and with communities in a partnership which will enable each of our institutions to promote and protect health in its fullest sense – the total physical, mental and social well-being of the people. In addition, the Corporation has placed particular emphasis on forging a sense of common purpose and partnership with communities in New York City, given our economic and employment capabilities. To this end, we have established a Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) Program. Our enabling legislation was revised during the 1990 legislative session to permit HHC contracts to come under the authority of Article 15A of the New York State Executive Law. The policy of the Board of Directors and the Administration is to work in common purpose with MWBEs. Therefore, HHC is committed to eradicating the barriers that have prevented MWBEs from obtaining contracts with us. The Corporation will seek to achieve maximum participation of MWBEs in all areas of procurement. We invite MWBEs to join us in this commitment by taking advantage of every opportunity to do business with the Corporation.
